Empire.

On March 1st 1777 the 13th colony ratified the articles of confederation joining together to create the United States of America. The duly appointed or elected representatives and by extension the peoples of the various colonies, by choice, created a central government in order to provide for the common defense and to regulate commerce between them.

Since then the articles were scrapped, the constitution was debated, ratified and amended. As people moved west new  territories and even a sovereign nation chose to join this union of states. In the middle of the 19th century when  other empires were in Flux and barely holding on America attempted to buy a huge swath of sparsely settled land from a neighboring country, then when they refuse to sell the democrat president

James Polk started a war of conquest capturing much of the high desert and west coast.

Once settled by a sufficient number they also chose to ask for statehood and in so doing have prospered far beyond those under their former government.

Then some states, in a bid for greater self determination, tried to break away from the union in what history has falsely labeled the civil war. These break away states were subsequently conquered forever changing their way of life and setting their slaves free (although it would take another 100 years for that freedom to be realized in the fullness of law).

Since that time America has tried to be a global power to varying degrees and even tried empire over seas for a time.

Today I don’t believe we’re a union of states any longer. The central power of the federal government has insinuated it’s self into every aspect of our lives. It dictates what we can and cannot do with our land. It dictates what we can eat. It controls our water supply. It manipulates our agriculture. It influences our schools. It convinced us that sodium floride and chlorine in our drinking water would be good for us. It influences and manipulates what’s left of our industry. It manipulates our curency, our energy supplies and our transportation, our health care and our local governments.

No, we are no longer a union of sovereign states but a conquered people. We are an empire conquered incrementally through means both insidious and blatant over the last 150 years.

This may be the reason Mr. Trump was elected president. He’s not quite a republican and not quite a democrat. Republicans have worked to limit liberty and freedom through claims of safety and democrats through the environment and a suffocating welfare state. Either way they frighten or educate us into giving up more and more liberty.

I’m not comfortable with Mr. Trump personally but if he’s being oposed this strongly by the powers in both parties and the media industrial complex perhaps change is possible. Maybe the constitution can come off life support and stand strong again.

Either that or the engineered civil unrest that’s sweeping the country, which is so reminiscent of what occurred in the fifties and sixties with racial tensions and a manipulated outcry against the very establishment they helped put into power with Nixon, Ford and Carter, has brought us a new strong man in the White House.

One response to “Empire.”
